Why Wood?

Our Story
Founded in 1990, Monet’s Kitchen was created as a tribute to the great impressionist Claude Monet—an artist not only on canvas, but in the kitchen as well. From the very beginning, Monet’s Kitchen has celebrated cooking as both an art form and a way to bring people together.
At its heart, Monet’s Kitchen has always been about family and connection. The story begins with the current owner’s great-grandfather, a WWII veteran who was awarded the French Croix de Guerre during his time in France. While stationed there, he fell in love with French food, cooking, and the deep traditions that surround the table. When he returned home, he married a Taos native and built a life rooted in community, where his love of food and connection became the foundation of the family’s story.
Monet’s Kitchen was later passed to his daughter, who would go on to play a defining role in the store’s history. With an eye for quality, she ran Monet’s Kitchen for many years, transforming it into a true Taos staple. Locals and visitors alike came to rely on the store not just for exceptional kitchen tools, but for trusted advice, thoughtful gifts, and the feeling of being welcomed like family.
Today, Monet’s Kitchen remains family-owned, stewarded by a new generation committed to honoring what came before while thoughtfully shaping what comes next. Rooted in tradition yet inspired by modern cooking and intentional living, the store continues to evolve while staying true to its origins.
